Turning Paint Skins into Jewelry

Turning leftover paint into something new has become more than a creative outlet — it’s a quiet lesson in patience, courage, and joy.

In addition to painting, I also make jewelry and magnets using my leftover paint. The process is quite lengthy because of the drying time between each step, but it’s deeply therapeutic — and honestly, it’s so much fun to transform what would otherwise be discarded into something beautiful and new.

I start by making what are called paint skins: I pour out leftover paint, create designs in the wet surface, and let it dry for three to four days. Then I look for patterns that catch my eye and glue a glass cabochon on top. After another day of drying, I cut it out, set it into a pendant tray, and let it cure for one more day before polishing and photographing. So far, I’ve made around a hundred pieces, which I’ll soon be making available for sale.

Lately, I’ve been entertaining the idea of having my first craft market booth at the end of November. It’s been a dream — and a goal — for quite a while, but I’ll admit, I’m incredibly nervous about taking the leap. Those pesky negative voices can get loud sometimes. When I really look at what I’m afraid of — Am I good enough? Will anyone like what I’ve made? Is my Swedish strong enough to answer questions about my work? — the list goes on.

But then I remind myself: it doesn’t matter. I have such deep respect for craftsmanship in all its forms, and for the people who have the courage to put themselves out there. Being vulnerable is brave. It builds strength, it’s contagious in the best way, and it’s something the world needs more of. Even if I don’t sell a single thing, I’ll learn something valuable and meet some amazing people along the way — so why not try?

For me, this is what creativity is really about: the willingness to experiment, to risk failure, and to keep learning. Every step — from the messy beginnings to the final polish — teaches me something new about patience, trust, and joy. I’ll keep you posted once I know the exact date of the market. As always, I thank you for following along and for being part of this journey. Your encouragement means more than you know.
